Korea has constant and enormous demand for marine meteorological information because some parts of it, as a peninsula, is surrounded by sea. Therefore, KMA conducts various kinds of marine meteorological observations to prevent marine disasters and provide data for weather forecast from 1996. The observations are carried out by moored buoys, automatic weather stations on lighthouse, research vessels and the base station of oceanic-meteorological observation in the Yellow Sea.
There are eight moored buoys and nine AWS on lighthouse operated by KMA to measure not only various meteorological elements (wind, air pressure, humidity, air temperature), but also the waves and the sea surface temperature.
Marine Meteorological Observation Buoy
AWS on Lighthouse
There is one weather vessel operated by KMA. This vessel conducts the marine meteorological observations and researches. The specifications are as the followings.
This unmanned station was constructed in 2005. The main purpose of the station is oceanic and meteorological observation in the Yellow Sea. The station is equipped with a suite of scientific sensors, including a wave radar system, a wind profiler, PM10 analyzer for observing Asian Dust and AWS.
